My mother, Marion Scully, started the first College Bound program at George Washington High School in Washington Heights in Manhattan in the early 1960's. The program focused on students who might not be headed towards attending college and helped them with academic, cultural and societal resources to help them succeed. Many of the students came from immigrant and first generation college families and it was one of the first programs in the nation to identify the need and put resources towards helping these students. My mother developed and mentored so many young men and women, many of whom kept in touch with her over the years to share their challenges and successes. Today, her granddaughter carries on her commitment to engaging young people in educational opportunities.
