Lorena Cabnal

1987 - Today

Date Added:

Lorena Cabnal is a Maya -Xinka activist who is trying to bring awareness about the issues that indigenous women living in the mountains of Xalapan, Guatemala face. Once she earned her degree in Community Social Psychology she co-founded the Association of Indigenous Women of Santa Maria Xalapan in 2003. She is a fighter for environmental protections, women's rights and opposes transnational mining and government militarization. Lorena and other women of the community are working hard to promote Xinka identity and to educate others about it. However, she also wants to address other issues that affect the Xinka people like malnutrition, hunger, violence against women, human trafficking, infant/child mortality, and the high rates of childbirth. Lorena has also started literacy programs for women and began teaching her community about the root of oppression, colonialism, capitalism, racism, and patriarchy. Lorena is an inspiration to her community but also to the world she decided to take matters into her own hand and work hard to defend her people from the many injustices they face.
