Marielle Franco was a black queer city councillor of the Municipal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro for the Liberty and Socialism Party. For the people of the Favela she represented change and was a leader of her community. Se had won a scholarship to Rio's respected Pontifical Catholic University. She has a 19 year old daughter with Monica Benicio and has always been an amazing parent. She use to be a preschool teacher from Rio but but her work as an activist began in 2000 when when a friend was killed by a stray bullet in a gunfight between gang members and the police. Becoming a beloved political figure who fought for the rights of the poor and disenfranchised. In 2007 she began working with the State representative Marcelo Freixo and coordinated the legislature's Committee for the Defense of Human Rights and Citizenship. In 2016 she was elected on the Rio de Janeiro city council with 51 other representatives. She fought hard for reproductive rights, for single mothers, against gender and police violence, and for the LGBTQ community. Unfortunately on the 15th of March her car was ambushed while she was going home, her driver and her were killed in an organized assassination. Millions of people protested and demanded justice however, the killer has not been identified.
