Selvena N. Brooks-Powers is a U.S. external affairs and community outreach manager for the $13 billion John F. Kennedy airport redevelopment. As a little girl she always knew she wanted to help people but did not know how she was going to do it. She ended up working for the state Senate Democrats, joined the Fight for 15 campaign and worked for the New York City Mayor's Office to combat Domestic Violence. At Post Authority she is proud of an ambitious contracting goal for firms owned by women and minorities. “The governor set a 30 percent MWBE goal, which the Port Authority also adopted, ensuring that we’re helping to build capacity for MWBE firms, so they are also able to take part in this program,”
