Jowelle de Souza is from Trinidad and an iconic Caribbean transgender woman. she was the first Trinidadian to undergo reassignment surgery and became the first openly transgender person to run for political office in the island. Ironically enough, gay people are not allowed to travel there even though the law is not completely enforced. Although she lost her bid for office. She remains an important symbol and advocate for transgender rights in the islands but she is also an advocate for animal rights.
