“The 2008 Constitution was constructed from grassroots social movements, many of them feminist. Sexual and reproductive rights, domestic violence as a problem that must be addressed, and youth as a group that must be guaranteed rights like health, housing and education all got protection. We lost on some fronts, like abortion and same sex marriage, but that’s how it goes. Women’s issues are often brushed aside." Yolanda Hernandez is a 29 year old sexual and reproductive health rights activist in Ecuador. She started off as an activist against the state over issues regarding abortion to then aligning herself with a political project with a team whose goal is to shape the pubic health policies. She then worked on a national strategy for family planning and the prevention of teenage pregnancy called ENIPLA which arised from the feminist movement. Thanks to her hard work and those involved in the fight, The Ministry of Health guaranteed the right to sexual and reproductive health which includes access to information and services to take part in any activity regarding reproduction or sexuality. In addition, the Ministry of Education worked to institutionalize sex education and the Ministry of Social and Economic Inclusion worked on bringing the most vulnerable sectors closer to information and services of sexual and reproductive rights. However, these projects ended when Correa won the presidency since he is conservative and believes that homosexuality can be cured. Nevertheless, the youth in the country have started a new political wave that agrees with the government on some aspects but is critical regarding things. Hernandez continues to fight for what she believes in and hopes that the future government has a more opened mind and is willing to listen.
