Samay Andy is a 26 year old indigenous and LGBTQ+ rights activist. Her main goal has been to defend her community and the environment they live in. With Correa's regime she noticed that the government was only exploiting oil and many other natural resources. She points out that "We don't see nature, territory, how the government sees it. As a means for profit. For us territory is sacred, it's part of our identity. Even though she continues to defend the environment and indigenous people she also faces an even bigger issue. In Ecuador changing gender identity on ID cards especially for transgender people has caused a huge uproar. Samay wanted gender identity to be universal in Ecuador however, she claims that Diana Rodriguez a leading transgender rights advocate sold all their hard work to the government for economical or political means. Making the change optional on ID cards uniquely for transgender people which is not applied for all citizens. This action by the government has been criticized since it seems like it is a way of segregating and distinguishing between transgender people and the rest of the population rather than including them into society. According to Samay this "turns us into second-class citizens, we don't get to exercise a full and dignified citizenship." She is still fighting to protect the rights of both the indigenous and LGBTQ+ community. Samay has been unifying both of these communities and people around the country to finally achieve equality for all.
