Josephine Cochrane

Josephine Cochrane was the successful inventor of the mechanical (automatic) dishwasher. Cochrane was the daughter of John Garis, a civil engineer. They lived in a mansion and threw many dinner parties. Cochrane came up with the idea when the servants carelessly chipped some of the heirloom dishes. After her husband died and living her with huge amount of debts, it motivated her to go through with her idea of developing the dishwasher. People were so impressed with her invention they called her machines "Cochrane Dishwashers", which she founded the Garis- Cochran Manufacturing Company. Cochrane dishwasher was exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. In 1916, KitchenAid bought her company and she still listing as one of its founder.
