Karina Aybar Jacobs is Dominican activist who came to the United States in 1999. Karina has a Bachelor’s Degree in Women’s Studies and Sociology from Hunter College and a Masters in Administration and Casework from the Hunter College School of Social Work. The Dominican activist joined the Nuevo Amanecer Program from the Dominican Women’s Development Center in 2005. Karina is currently the Program Director at the Nuevo Amanecer/New Dawn Program since 2012. Karina is an example of a feminist who is very passionate about raising consciousness and promoting action about women’s rights issues, women of color, gender equality, domestic violence, and assisting empower women. She has participated during four consecutive years in the Vagina Monologues in Spanish, a play that was created to promote awareness against violence towards women. Karina is also a steering Committee Member of the Dominican Women’s Coalition, a collective of women leaders dedicated to increasing political power to Dominican women and the Latino community in New York.
