Gloria Allred -- Attorney and Human rights activist. Gloria Allred, born Gloria Rachel Bloom, grew up in a working-class Jewish family in Philadelphia. She was born on July 3, 1941 and ventured into the world of politics and law as she got older. Allred graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963 where she earned a bachelor's degree in English. Gloria wrote an autobiography titled "Fight back and Win," where she spoke of a traumatic life changing event that occurred in her life. When she was vacationing in Acapulco in 1966, she was raped at gunpoint, this event led to her becoming pregnant but at the time abortions were illegal, so she had a back-alley abortion. After this traumatic event, Allred decided to study law and advocate for cases that involve civil rights. Allred enrolled in the Southern University of Law in 1968, and kickstarted her career as an Attorney in 1975 after the State Bar of California. Allred's legal career has spanned many decades, and she has represented a variety of high profile and often controversial cases. Her cases mostly range from sexual harassments, women's rights, wrongful termination and employment discrimination. In 1976, Allred founded the firm Allred, Maroko & Goldberg with fellow law graduates. One particular case that Allred represented were lesbian activists Deborah Johnson and Zandra Rolón in their lawsuit against the owner of a Los Angeles restaurant, Papa Choux, after he denied them service in a booth reserved for "romantic couples." Furthermore, Allred has called for numerous investigations in certain individuals like Bob Packwood who had a history of sexual harassment as well as Singer Micheal Jackson, who held his child over a hotel balcony. Allred's law career has continued for 40 years, and her cases were all resulted in impactful changes, especially those involving the protection of women's rights. Allred is an inspiration to many and was even inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. Today, she continues her legal endeavors while being the President of the Women's Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund (WERDLEF).
