1955 - Today

Date Added:

German musician and actress, Catherina “Nina” Hagen is one of the icons of punk internationally. She has recorded 16 albums mixing different musical styles, from opera to punk-rock. Her first big hit was released when she was 19 years old and her last album went on sale in December 2022. She was the daughter of Eva Maria Hagen, a German actress and singer, and Hans Hagen, a screenwriter of Jewish origin. She was born in East Berlin during the early days of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). At the age of four she began to practice ballet, before the age of ten she was already studying singing, piano and guitar. Recognized as a child prodigy, she grew up acting in movies and performing operas. In her teenage years she left school and traveled to Poland to enter into the world of music. In 1976 the government expatriated her stepfather, the singer, poet and dissident of the GDR, Wolf Biermann. Soon Nina and her mother moved to the Federal Republic of Germany. She signed a contract with CBS Records to record an LP. After spending a season in London, she formed The Nina Hagen Band and released her self-titled album, which was hugely successful. Due to differences with some members of the group, she decided to leave the band. She moved to the United States and sent audios of her singing to put together her second album, Unbehagen. She moved to Amsterdam where she met the father of her first daughter. After Cosma's birth, CBS offered her to make her first solo album, NunSexMonkRock. She released albums, toured the world and in 1985 appeared at the first version of the Rock in Rio festival, in Brazil. Hagen is known today as “the godmother of German Punk”, and her unique style and presence marked an entire generation in Europe. In 1989 she had her second child. She lived for seasons between Europe and America. She worked as a TV presenter for the German channel RTLplus and hosted a science fiction show for the British Sci-Fi channel. Over the years she has continued to make records, collaborating with other artists and going on tour.
